ExtinctionExtinction is a natural Many species had ceased to exist before humans However, in the last 400 years, the number of animals and plants becoming extinct has reached crisis Human population levels have risen dramatically in the same time period and man's predatory instincts combined with his ruthless consumption of natural resources are directly responsible for the DodoThe Dodo is a classic example of how human behavior can cause irreparable damage to the earth's biological The flightless Dodo was native to the Island of Mauritius in the Indian O It lived off fruit fallen from the island's trees and lived unthreatened until humans arrived in The docile bird became a source of food for sailors and lacked the ability to protect itself from animals introduced to the island by humans such as pigs, monkeys and The population of Dodos rapidly decreased and the last one was killed in Endangered AnimalsIn 2002 many animals remain threatened with extinction as a result of human The World Wildlife Fund works tirelessly to raise awareness of the predicament facing these animals and find ways to protect By focusing on a number of high profile, 'charismatic icons' such as the rhino, panda, whale and tiger, the WWF aims to communicate, 'critically important environmental issues' The organization's ultimate goal is to, 'stop the degradation of the planet's natural environment and to build a future in which humans live in harmony with nature'RhinosThe Rhino horn is a highly prized item for practitioners of Asian This has led to the animal being relentlessly hunted in its natural Once widespread in Africa and Eurasia, most rhinos now live in protected natural parks and Their numbers have rapidly decreased in the last 50 years, over half the remaining rhinos disappeared in the 1970s, and the animals remain under constant threat from The Giant PandaThe future of the WWF's symbol is far from As few as 1000 remain in the wild, living in small isolated These groups have been cut off from each other as a result of deforestation and human expansion in to their natural The Chinese government has set up 33 panda reserves to protect these beautiful animals and made poaching them punishable with 20 years in However, the panda's distinct black and white patched coat fetches a high price on the black market and determined poachers still pose one of the most serious threats to the animals continued WhalesThe International Whaling Commission meets every The agenda covers ways to ensure the survival of the species and the complex problems arising from countries such as Japan, wishing to hunt certain whales for 'scientific' Despite the fact that one third the world's oceans have been proclaimed whale sanctuaries, 7 out of 13 whale species remain The plight of the North Atlantic Right Whale is particularly Hunted for their rich supply of oil, their numbers have dwindled to just Collisions with ships, toxic pollution and becoming entangled in fishing nets are other major causes of whale TigersThe last 100 years has seen a 95% reduction in the numbers of remaining tigers to between 5000 and 7000 and The Bali, Javan, and Caspian tigers are already The South China tiger is precariously close to disappearing, with only 20 to 30 still Like the Rhino horn, tiger bones and organs are sought after for traditional Chinese These items are traded illegally along with tiger Take ActionThe WWF is actively involved in many areas of the world fighting to protect the natural habitats of endangered animals from further damage and curb the activities of They also work to influence governments and policy makers to introduce laws aimed at reducing the threat of pollution and Our own individual efforts at home and in the workplace can also make a By reducing waste and pollution, saving water, wood and energy, and reusing and recycling whenever possible, we can reduce the possibility of even more animals being lost, never to Your turnDo you think enough is being done to protect animals? Send us your Far out into the ocean to the north and west of Britain are the cold wild islands of the Outer Hebrides of S They make a line of beautiful beaches 150 miles Further west is the small group of islands called Saint K They are cold and wild too, but without The islands are tall volcanic rocks hundreds of metres For thousands of years, people lived on these In 1930 the last people, there were only 36 of them, had a meeting and decided to The biggest island in the group is called H Sheep still live there without any When you arrive by boat, you see very tall black rocks all Some big rocks make their own small This true story happened on the tallest of the rocks – “Stac An Armin” in In those days, people still lived on the islands of Saint K Their stone houses were all in one village by the ocean at the bottom of a tall dark The houses only had one room – for people and sheep, which used to live with them in the winter and Two men from the village, McDonald and McKinnon, were on the It was their work to collect birds – some for food, some to make shoes or hats Some dead birds they put in the earth to help their vegetables They found one strange big It was They decided to bring it home to the I think people in the village were interested in the We now know that this was a Great Auk, a kind of swimming bird that lived in many parts of the North A It was big and strong and had a loud They began to talk with the other people in the village about what they should do with After two days, the weather got worse and then there was a terrible The people in the village decided that this was because of the bird and they killed This was the last example of the Great Auk in B Four years later, the last Great Auk in the world died in IWe know the Great Auk died out because of But where did the people of Saint Kilda go? This is more difficult to Some say that they were bored living on the island so far from modern Other people think that the problem was tourists, who began to visit Saint Kilda at the end of the 19th A new theory says that using too many dead birds as fertilizer made their food I think it was a mistake to kill the istake that resulted in killing this The day after the people brought the bird home, the weather got worse and At that time, they had less knowledge about nature, they could only believe in God to help them decide what was wrong and what was So it was so easy to make mistake about what they didn’t know and it happened by The article is very clear about But at the first they thought they should bring it home and kill it for That is not Unfortunately, it was the last ”Oswaldo Herrera writes “This article is very interesting, and we need to think about Nowadays we are destroying our world and furthermore, the animals and plants that exist in There are a lot of warnings but most of the time we do not care about them - I think that this articles helps us to reflect and to be conscious about all the animals and plants that we are destroying with all the pollution that we generate ”

2、实验材料: 缅甸陆龟又名象龟,俗名Elongated tortoise(拉丁学名Indotestudo elongata),属龟鳖目、曲颈龟亚目、陆龟科、缅甸陆龟属。实验象龟体重3000g,头项部淡黄色,有对称鳞片,吻印,上喙略勾曲,鼻孔粉红色,背腹甲被覆角质盾片完整无损。背甲隆起光滑平坦……

关于“Modern Architecture”的 Modern architecture, not to be confused with 'contemporary architecture', is a term given to a number of building styles with similar characteristics, primarily the simplification of form and the elimination of While the style was conceived early in the 20th century and heavily promoted by a few architects, architectural educators and exhibits, very few Modern buildings were built in the first half of the For three decades after the Second World War, however, it became the dominant architectural style for institutional and corporate Origins Some historians see the evolution of Modern architecture as a social matter, closely tied to the project of Modernity and hence to the Enlightenment, a result of social and political Others see Modern architecture as primarily driven by technological and engineering developments, and it is true that the availability of new building materials such as iron, steel, concrete and glass drove the invention of new building techniques as part of the Industrial R In 1796, Shrewsbury mill owner Charles Bage first used his ‘fireproof’ design, which relied on cast iron and brick with flag stone Such construction greatly strengthened the structure of mills, which enabled them to accommodate much bigger Due to poor knowledge of iron's properties as a construction material, a number of early mills It was not until the early 1830s that Eaton Hodgkinson introduced the section beam, leading to widespread use of iron construction, this kind of austere industrial architecture utterly transformed the landscape of northern Britain, leading to the description, "Dark satanic mills" of places like Manchester and parts of West Y The Crystal Palace by Joseph Paxton at the Great Exhibition of 1851 was an early example of iron and glass construction; possibly the best example is the development of the tall steel skyscraper in Chicago around 1890 by William Le Baron Jenney and Louis S Early structures to employ concrete as the chief means of architectural expression (rather than for purely utilitarian structure) include Frank Lloyd Wright's Unity Temple, built in 1906 near Chicago, and Rudolf Steiner's Second Goetheanum, built from 1926 near Basel, S Other historians regard Modernism as a matter of taste, a reaction against eclecticism and the lavish stylistic excesses of Victorian Era and Edwardian Art N Whatever the cause, around 1900 a number of architects around the world began developing new architectural solutions to integrate traditional precedents (Gothic, for instance) with new technological The work of Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright in Chicago, Victor Horta in Brussels, Antoni Gaudi in Barcelona, Otto Wagner in Vienna and Charles Rennie Mackintosh in Glasgow, among many others, can be seen as a common struggle between old and Modernism as Dominant Style By the 1920s the most important figures in Modern architecture had established their The big three are commonly recognized as Le Corbusier in France, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius in G Mies van der Rohe and Gropius were both directors of the Bauhaus, one of a number of European schools and associations concerned with reconciling craft tradition and industrial Frank Lloyd Wright's career parallels and influences the work of the European modernists, particularly via the Wasmuth Portfolio, but he refused to be categorized with Wright was a major influence on both Gropius and van der Rohe, however, as well as on the whole of organic In 1932 came the important MOMA exhibition, the International Exhibition of Modern Architecture, curated by Philip J Johnson and collaborator Henry-Russell Hitchcock drew together many distinct threads and trends, identified them as stylistically similar and having a common purpose, and consolidated them into the International S This was an important turning With World War II the important figures of the Bauhaus fled to the United States, to Chicago, to the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and to Black Mountain C While Modern architectural design never became a dominant style in single-dwelling residential buildings, in institutional and commercial architecture Modernism became the pre-eminent, and in the schools (for leaders of the profession) the only acceptable, design solution from about 1932 to about Architects who worked in the international style wanted to break with architectural tradition and design simple, unornamented The most commonly used materials are glass for the facade, steel for exterior support, and concrete for the floors and interior supports; floor plans were functional and The style became most evident in the design of Perhaps its most famous manifestations include the United Nations headquarters (Le Corbusier, Oscar Niemeyer, Sir Howard Robertson), the Seagram Building (Ludwig Mies van der Rohe), and Lever House (Skidmore, Owings, and Merrill), all in New Y A prominent residential example is the Lovell House (Richard Neutra) in Los A Detractors of the international style claim that its stark, uncompromisingly rectangular geometry is Le Corbusier once described buildings as "machines for living", but people are not machines and it was suggested that they do not want to live in Even Philip Johnson admitted he was "bored with the " Since the early 1980s many architects have deliberately sought to move away from rectilinear designs, towards more eclectic During the middle of the century, some architects began experimenting in organic forms that they felt were more human and Mid-century modernism, or organic modernism, was very popular, due to its democratic and playful Alvar Aalto and Eero Saarinen were two of the most prolific architects and designers in this movement, which has influenced contemporary Although there is debate as to when and why the decline of the modern movement occurred, criticism of Modern architecture began in the 1960s on the grounds that it was universal, sterile, elitist and lacked Its approach had become ossified in a "style" that threatened to degenerate into a set of Siegfried Giedion in the 1961 introduction to his evolving text, Space, Time and Architecture (first written in 1941), could begin "At the moment a certain confusion exists in contemporary architecture, as in painting; a kind of pause, even a kind of " At the Metropolitan Museum of Art, a 1961 symposium discussed the question "Modern Architecture: Death or Metamorphosis?" In New York, the coup d'état appeared to materialize in controversy around the Pan Am Building that loomed over Grand Central Station, taking advantage of the modernist real estate concept of "air rights",[1] In criticism by Ada Louise Huxtable and Douglas Haskell it was seen to "sever" the Park Avenue streetscape and "tarnish" the reputations of its consortium of architects: Walter Gropius, Pietro Belluschi and the builders Emery Roth & S The rise of postmodernism was attributed to disenchantment with Modern By the 1980s, postmodern architecture appeared triumphant over modernism, including the temple of the Light of the World, a futuristic design for its time Guadalajara Jalisco La Luz del Mundo Sede International; however, postmodern aesthetics lacked traction and by the mid-1990s, a neo-modern (or hypermodern) architecture had once again established international pre- As part of this revival, much of the criticism of the modernists has been revisited, refuted, and re-evaluated; and a modernistic idiom once again dominates in institutional and commercial contemporary practice, but must now compete with the revival of traditional architectural design in commercial and institutional architecture; residential design continues to be dominated by a traditional
